Cold and Flu !
The common cold is caused by a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. Symptoms typically appear one to two days after infection and last around a week, varying in type and severity but generally including sneezing, sore throat, runny or blocked nose, cough, headache and sometimes, especially in children, fever. The symptoms will generally resolve themselves and it is usually possible to continue with one’s daily business.
Influenza is also a viral infection. It is characterised by sudden onset with fever, extreme fatigue, muscle soreness as well as some or all of the symptoms of a cold. These symptoms can last up to two weeks and usually require the patient to rest completely for several days.
Colds and flu spread more easily in the winter months due to the cold weather; we tend to spend less time outdoors and turn the heating up indoors. This, together with close contact with others in the home, at school, at work or on public transport creates a perfect environment for the spread of a virus.
The most obvious way to prevent colds is washing hands often, with soap and under warm running water for at least 30 seconds. Getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet of whole, nutrient-dense foods and drinking plenty of fluids is key to building a strong immune system along with maintaining relationships that nurture you. Be that as it may, if you find yourself fighting a cold virus or flu-like sickness this season, you might like to take a homeopathic remedy to boost your body to stand up and fight off the symptoms. We can concentrate on alleviating the symptoms and strengthening the body’s natural defences.
The underlying principle of homeopathy is that “like cures like.” Instead of suppressing symptoms, homeopathy stimulates the body’s innate healing abilities with microdoses of natural substances that replicate the very symptoms that plague us. It’s like putting your body on notice to “Wake up and fight back!” Homeopathy has been used to treat the flu since the 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic, when its success was widely reported in the news.
The most common cold and flu remedies are listed in the chart below. To choose a remedy, a person should match their symptoms with those of their chosen remedy on the chart. Self-prescribing can be difficult and the advice of a registered homeopath will always provide the most appropriate treatment and most effective outcome.
